Volunteers the backbone of boxing club
Keeping the Albion Boxing Club going at the level it has for the past 23 years could now have happened without the volunteers throughout the club. Jim Worthen is a firm believer they are what has the club in such strong standing entering it's 24th season.
"You see the people here getting things ready, but they're only a small portion of the Albion Boxing team of volunteers we have," said Worthen. "You can run a club without the volunteers, but we would not be able to offer the quality we can without them."
Preparing for the opening on Sept. 10,michael kors femmes, staff and volunteers were preparing equipment and cleaning the club earlier this week. Worthen said the club has acquired a few crucial pieces of new equipment for this season.
The club purchased three striking stands, a new elliptical machine, new gloves and new headgear during the offseason. He said the popularity of the striking stands last year made the decision to purchase new ones easier.
"We just had one last year and not only was it popular, but it got a lot of wear as you can see so we looked into the new ones for this season," he said. "Some find it easier to visualize and in boxing you're trying to hit particular locations or do certain combinations so this allows us to represent that better."
Again Worthen said without the volunteers on the fundraising committee the purchasing of the equipment would not be possible.
Having this equipment is important to the success of the boxers as the club tries to mostly be a competitive club.
"When you have the best gloves or training equipment available to the kids or members that come in it helps," he said. "We have sent boxers to Ireland, Mexico and all over the United States and Canada. We have a great group of coaches as well, but we want to make sure the equipment we can offer is in good shape."
Looking past the opening date on Monday, Worthen said the club hopes to host a card in the fall. That may prove to be more difficult than it has been in past years as the Michelin Athletic and Social Club has closed. This is where they hosted their cards in the past.
"The Michelin Club was a great facility and we really enjoyed being there," he said. "This year we want to have another card, but the current problem we have is trying to find a good location to host one."
