Lobster and Camping
Our first adventure began on August 15th. It wasn't easy, neither one of us are morning people. We were tired but excited to be on the way. We decided to leave early because the traffic in Northern Virginia is really bad every day and we wanted to avoid the worst of it. It was a long drive, but it didn't seem quite so bad as other times I have made the trip. We kept ourselves busy by updating our facebook status's and sleeping when it wasn't our turn to drive. Not to mention singing Sweet Home Alabama very loudly. There's not much else to do in a 6 X 5 enclosed space for 11 hours.
We spent the night at my (Erin's) parents house and the next day we got up and left to go to my Aunt and Uncle's house in New Hampshire. Thank heavens my father gave us his GPS to get there because if we had tried to find it on our own it would have never happened. We had a lobster dinner there with Susie, Alan, my cousin's Kim and Ashley and their husbands, and Susie and Alan's neighbors. I hadn't had lobster in so long! It was really good!
The next day Danny and I,asics singapore, Susie and Kim headed to Kittery, Maine to go shopping. It is a huge outlet store area. I got my very first coach purse! Before going there we rode up the coast towards York, ME stopping a few times for pics. The first stop was at Fort McClary. Forts on the site have protected Portsmouth Harbor since 1689.
We went all the way to York and stopped at The Goldenrod and bought a pound of salt water taffy. It's really good, especially the peanut putter kind. really good clam chowda I might say.
Then after Kim's husband Dan got out of work we went out on their boat. I would have to say that it was one of the highlights of the trip. Danny and I both decided that we wanted to buy a boat someday. No joke. I could do that every day. We went right up the coast past Portsmouth, NH and out into the Atlantic a bit.
After the boat ride it was time to go back to Vermont to my parents house. Tuesday I took Danny around my hometown area to do some of the "touristy" things. We stopped in Quechee at the covered bridge and then went to Simon Pearce to watch glass blowing in progress. Sorry some of these next pics are blurry. If you are ever in the area you should really stop and watch these guys at work.
On Wednesday we left with my parents to go camping at Pawtuckaway State Park. It was a lot of fun. I grew up camping, but hadn't been since High School.
This was the tent we slept in:
My parents Camper, they had a huge tarp over it, and thank heavens for it because on our last night there, there was a torrential downpour with thunder and lightening. That tarp kept us relatively dry.
We went kayaking and swimming right from the campsite:
We camped from Wednesday to Saturday. On Saturday we said goodbye to my parents and then headed to Lancaster County, PA. It took us a lot longer to get there than anticipated due to a horrid rainstorm while driving through New York and missing our exit in PA. If ever travelling that way please note that exit 53 is the FIRST exit after crossing the border from NY. We did make it to our hotel around 7 pm, ate dinner, and were so exhausted and excited about sleeping in a real bed that we passed out pretty early.
The next day we checked out of the hotel and started our trip around Lancaster. We first went to the Amish Village. We got a tour of the house, which use to be an Amish hometead. It was very interesting, and I probably would have enjoyed it more but I was suffering a bout of acid reflux the whole time which made it so we had to hurry through the rest of the estate.
Danny in the One room schoolhouse:
Our next stop was a buggy ride.
Our drivers name was Jessie. He was raised in an Amish family (the youngest of 9 boys to be exact), but wasn't a member of the church. He only went to school until the 8th grade, as all Amish kids do. He worked at Aaron's Jessica's Spring to Fall and was a Horse Dentist as well. I must say we got very lucky in getting him as our driver. He was full of information most people wouldn't know because he was raised in that lifestyle.
The countryside was beautiful:
Unfortunately we went to Lancaster on a Sunday and since the Amish spend the day in church most of the shops were closed. We went to a few shops, but the best ones were closed. So if you plan on going make sure you know what is open and closed on Sunday's. Since we did the two things we wanted to hit, we decided that we had enough time to stop by Boyd's Bears which is just outside of Gettysberg. The shop is HUGE, but for me there seemed to be a lack of teddy bears for a shop of this size. The do have other merchandise inside and if I was a millionaire I could have spent a small fortune. If in the area you should definitely check it out. They also have a Longaberger basket area inside.
And that was that. We left Gettysburg and headed home. It's nice to be back, but I hate the idea of having to go back to work tomorrow. We're still not sure what we're going to do this coming weekend for our 3rd weekend Adventure. We spent so much money on this trip whatever we do is going to have to be cheap. We'll see what we can come up with!
